O'Neil was a student at high-school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil had received high praise from panel of judges. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, as well as the bottom two. It was a shock to the judges and they advised to the audience to vote for Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the most impressive singing abilities. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following an impressive string of performances. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
